TTP Resurgence from Afghan Soil: Pakistan’s Deadliest Security Challenge in 2026

The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has escalated attacks in early 2026, with estimates of over 6,000 fighters operating from safe havens in Afghanistan’s Kunar and Nangarhar provinces. Recent incidents include roadside bombs killing police officers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, suicide attacks on security checkpoints, and cross-border raids that have pushed Pakistan-Afghanistan relations to a new low.

Pakistan has repeatedly accused the Taliban regime of harboring TTP leadership and fighters, despite Kabul’s denials, leading to retaliatory airstrikes and intensified border fencing efforts.

This resurgence is the most serious internal security threat since 2014, with TTP claiming responsibility for hundreds of casualties in 2025 alone. UN monitoring reports confirm Taliban tolerance or support for TTP, complicating bilateral relations.

Pakistan faces limited strategic options: continued airstrikes risk escalation; diplomatic pressure via China has had limited success. Long-term solutions require internal reforms.

Failure to contain TTP could destabilize Pakistan.
